The British patrol vessel "HMS Mersey" (P283) arrives in Gibraltar after monitoring Russian ships in the English Channel
The British patrol vessel "HMS Mersey" (P283) of the Royal Navy has arrived in Gibraltar to carry out maintenance work and receive logistical support after participating in maritime surveillance operations in waters near the United Kingdom.
In recent months, the vessel has conducted monitoring missions of Russian military and merchant ships navigating through the English Channel. In these operations, it has worked alongside other British units and resources from allied countries.
During one of these missions, the patrol vessel "HMS Mersey" (P283) collaborated with a Royal Navy Wildcat helicopter to track the movements of the Russian warship "RFS Soobrazitelny" and the tanker "MV Anatoly Kolodkin" as they sailed through waters near the United Kingdom.
The objective of these operations is to maintain control over maritime activity in strategically important areas and to gather information on the movements of Russian ships. They also enhance coordination between British units and their NATO allies.
The patrol vessel "HMS Mersey" (P283) belongs to the River class and is designed to remain at sea for extended periods. With a crew of around 50 personnel, it can perform various maritime surveillance and security tasks, fishery protection, inspections, and support for other operations.
During its stay in Gibraltar, the vessel will carry out maintenance work and receive logistical support before continuing its operations.
