The Navy Brings Together Experts in Cartagena for the Protection of Submarine Infrastructures
The Navy held a seminar on the protection of submarine infrastructures in Cartagena on October 20 and 21, as part of the Mediterranean Coast Guard Functions Forum (MEDCGFF), which Spain presides over this year. The meeting brought together specialists, institutions, and companies from the sector to enhance cooperation against potential threats.
During the sessions, representatives from the Maritime Action Force of the Navy analyzed the main threats affecting these facilities and the legal framework that regulates operations to protect them.
Companies such as Telefónica, Telxius, Red Eléctrica, Medgaz, and Enagás explained the characteristics of their infrastructures, including submarine communication and electricity cables and gas transport facilities.
The program included visits to the Navy Diving Center and the Mine Countermeasure units, where attendees learned about their facilities, means, and operational capabilities.
Technologies from the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) were also presented, including unmanned underwater vehicles and remotely piloted aircraft systems. Meanwhile, the Hydrographic Institute of the Navy showcased its hydrographic capabilities and cartographic support.
Participants also discussed strategic cooperation in the Mediterranean and the capabilities and modernization plans of the Navy's Maritime Action Operations and Surveillance Center (COVAM), which is responsible for contributing to the surveillance and understanding of the maritime environment.
The seminar concluded with an event presided over by the commander of the Maritime Action Command of Cartagena, Captain Julio Fernando Pérez Macías. The Navy emphasized the importance of collaboration between the Armed Forces, authorities, and companies to protect essential infrastructures for communications and energy supply.
