Consular Meeting with Four Former Presidents of the Canary Islands

Four former presidents of the Government of the Canary Islands attended a lunch hosted by the Consular Corps accredited in Santa Cruz de Tenerife yesterday. Alfonso Soriano Benítez de Lugo, the first president of the Canary Islands Council; Fernando Fernández Martín, Manuel Hermoso Rojas, and Paulino Rivero Baute shared various experiences from their respective terms during dessert, discussing the relationship between the Canary Islands, the European Union, and Latin America.

Jerónimo Saavedra Acevedo, who was in Paris; Lorenzo Olarte Cullen, due to a last-minute issue; and Román Rodríguez, who was at an official event with King Felipe VI, excused their absence. Manuel Hermoso particularly praised Jerónimo Saavedra, despite the political censorship of the time, and the special friendship that exists between them, while all fondly remembered the personality and career of Adán Martín Menis.

The dean of the Consular Corps and consul of Italy, Silvio Pelizzolo, welcomed them and thanked the former presidents of the Government of the Canary Islands for their presence. The consul of Chile, Pedro García Sanjuán, briefly recounted the political evolution of Canary autonomy, for which its direct protagonists expressed their gratitude for the invitation.
