The USS "Roosevelt" Destroyer Arrives at the Port of Las Palmas
The USS "Roosevelt" (DDG-80) destroyer arrived this morning on an unofficial visit to the port of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and is docked at the extension of the Santa Catalina dock. An unusual stop – lasting four days – for a ship of this class from the U.S. Navy, which is based in Rota.
It is the thirtieth ship of the “Arleigh Burke” class, built at the Ingalls shipyard in Pascagoula (USA) and in service since October 2000.
With a maximum displacement of 9,200 tons, it measures 155.30 m in total length, 20 m in beam, and 9.40 m in draft. It is powered by four General Electric LM2500-30 gas turbines, with a power of 100,000 horsepower over two shafts, allowing it to maintain a maximum speed of 30 knots.
It is equipped with the Aegis system and has an armament consisting of seven guns of different calibers, a Phalanx CIWS system, and Mk 41 VLS cells for 96 missiles of various types – including the famous BGM 109 Tomahawk – an ASROC RUM-139, and carries two MH-60R Seahawk helicopters.
