Two Spanish Suction Sails for the Vessel “EEMS Traveller”
The Spanish company Bound4blue, specialized in auxiliary wind propulsion systems for ships, has completed the installation of two 17 m high eSAIL suction sails on the Dutch-flagged vessel “EEMS Traveler” (IMO 9218234), with a capacity of 2,903 DWT and owned by Amasus Shipping. Manufactured by the Biscayan company Haizea Wind, these are the largest sails installed to date.
The installation project for the sails had two phases. A year ago, during a scheduled periodic inspection of the vessel in the Netherlands, reinforcements for the sails were manufactured and installed on board. Subsequently, at Haizea Wind's factory in Aranda de Duero, the verticalization and integration of all internal elements were carried out.
The company Toro y Betolaza was responsible for verticalizing the systems, which required two cranes and various auxiliary equipment to accurately position the sails at their anchoring points.
Meanwhile, Bound4blue has been monitoring the vessel's consumption data, which will be analyzed by an external company and compared to assess fuel savings and emissions results over the next twelve months. This data can be used to quantify the actual effects of the system on board the vessel and will serve as a basis for future developments.
This installation, approved by Bureau Veritas, is part of the Sails for Cargo project co-financed by the Ports 4.0 Fund of Puertos del Estado and has received support from the Port Authority of Bilbao, Bilbao PortLab, and the companies Toro y Betolaza and Haizea Wind Group.
