Tribute from the magazine “Capitán” to Enrique García Melón (1940-2025)
The recently published issue 34 of the magazine “Capitán” dedicates a broad tribute to the captain and professor at the University of La Laguna Enrique García Melón (1940-2025), founder and first president of the Canary Academy of Navigation Sciences, based in the city of the Adelantados.
The president of the Academy, Dr. Juan Carlos Díaz Lorenzo, dedicates a comprehensive and detailed study to the figure of Enrique García Melón, in his personal, professional, and academic aspects. This is followed by an extensive summary of his professional and university career through his academic curriculum and the tribute to his memory at the Cruz de las Rivero, last May, which is located in the chapel of the Melón Rodríguez family.
On this occasion, the magazine “Capitán” —led by Professor Dr. Antonio Burgos Ojeda— includes a detailed analysis by José Rafael Díaz Hernández, titled “Cooperate or Lose: Port Intelligence to Survive Global Logistical Disorder.”
Other articles included in this issue are: “The Figureheads of Fred. Olsen & Co.”, by Juan Carlos Díaz Lorenzo and “Impact of Submarine Outfalls on Metal Concentrations in Intertidal Species of the Canary Islands”, by Enrique Lozano Bilbao, Arturo Hardisson, Soraya Paz, Dailos González-Weller, Samuel Alejandro, Javier Darias and Ángel J. Gutiérrez.
Professors Dr. Gonzalo Lozano Soldevilla and Enrique Lozano Bilbao sign an article titled “Official Delivery of the BOMAG 'Odón de Buen',” in which they intertwine the news of the construction and delivery of the new IEO vessel with the family lineage that connects them to the renowned oceanographer Odón de Buen (1863-1945).
The rest of issue 34 of the magazine “Capitán,” which dedicates its cover to Enrique García Melón, includes various news related to the Canary Academy of Navigation Sciences, among which stand out the book “The Corregidor in the Canary Islands,” the result of the doctoral thesis of General José Manuel Pérez Beviá; the admission of Dr. María Consuelo Revert Gironés, the first woman to join the Academy, and the awarding of Honorary President titles to Enrique García Melón and Gonzalo Lozano Soldevilla; the tribute to Captain Manuel Garrocho Martín; the admission of José Arturo Navarro Riaño into the Academy and the awarding of the title of Honorary Academician to the illustrious professor Alberto Darias Príncipe.
