Sweden Tests New Electric Fast Ferry Capable of Sailing at 30 Knots
Sweden is advancing in the electrification of passenger maritime transport with the launch of the electric fast ferry P-12 "Candela," developed by the company Candela Technology. The vessel uses hydrofoils to lift above the water and reduce resistance while sailing.
The ferry is designed to carry 30 passengers and reach a maximum speed of 30 knots, a figure higher than that of many conventional electric ferries. Its hydrofoils, made of carbon fiber, allow the hull to rise more than a meter above the water's surface.
One of its advantages is that it generates very little wake, allowing it to avoid the speed limit of 12 knots that exists in certain areas of Stockholm to protect the coasts and avoid disturbances to other vessels.
The electric ferry P-12 "Candela" will begin as a pilot test covering the route between Stockholm and Ekerö, reducing the travel time from 55 to 25 minutes.
