Statsraad Lehmkuhl Anchored in the Shelter of Anaga
In front of the port of Cruz de Tenerife, sheltered by Anaga, the elegant maritime silhouette of the Norwegian training ship “Statsraad Lehmkuhl” stands out, currently on a technical stop for crew change and supply of provisions.
Rigged as a three-masted barque, it is owned by the Statsraad Lehmkuhl Foundation, based in Bergen. It pays tribute to the memory of Minister Kristoffer Lehmkuhl who, in collaboration with the company Det Bergenske Dampskibsselskab (Bergen Line), was able to purchase it from the British government in 1921, and it entered service in 1923.
Today, it is one of the oldest sailing ships in the world in active service, dedicated to training future officers of the merchant navy of the Nordic country. In the following link in our section From the Sea and the Ships, readers will find a comprehensive article about the maritime life of this historic vessel.
