Repsol Completes First Bioethanol Supply to a Container Ship in the Port of Barcelona
Repsol has successfully completed the supply of 2,800 tons of bioethanol to the container ship "Antonia Maersk" (IMO 9948762), flagged in Denmark. This is the first bunkering operation of this kind carried out in the port of Barcelona and one of the first conducted throughout the Mediterranean.
The supply was carried out by the ship "Bahía Candela" (IMO 1056642), flagged in Spain. This vessel, the most modern in Repsol's fleet, is operated by Mureloil. During the operation, it used its battery system, allowing refueling without emissions and reducing environmental impact.
This operation demonstrates that bioethanol can become an alternative to reduce emissions from maritime transport and confirms that both port infrastructure and logistics are already prepared to supply this type of fuel on a large scale. Furthermore, it paves the way for the development of other marine fuels based on alcohols, such as methanol.
