The Monohull “Ramón Llull” Will Be Remotorized in Denia
Balearia will renew the four engines of the monohull fast ferry “Ramón Llull,” which usually operates on the Denia-Formentera route. The work will begin in mid-May with the vessel afloat docked at the port of Denia and will last until early June, during which time it will be replaced by the catamaran “Jaume III,” according to the company.
The Denia-Formentera route operated by Baleària is currently the only direct connection between the peninsula and the smaller Pitiusas island. Baleària, which started this connection in 2006 with services only during the high season, has been increasing the frequency and also its schedule for the rest of the year.
Construction number 311 from the Rodriquez Cantieri Navale SpA shipyard, located in Pietra Ligure (Italy), the monohull “Ramón Llull” entered service in June 2003 on the Barcelona-Mahón-Alcudia route. It has also served the Alcudia-Ciudadela and Algeciras-Tangier routes and is a smaller sibling of the monohulls “Federico García Lorca” and “Volcán de Tauro,” later “Al Sabini.”
Weighing 2,500 gross tons and 349 tons deadweight, it measures 83.35 m in overall length, 13.50 m in beam, and 1.76 m in draft. It has a capacity for 526 passengers and 90 cars and is powered by four MTU engines, which drive an equal number of water jets, allowing it to maintain a speed of 34 knots. IMO Code 9262065.
