Inauguration of the iconic “Queen Mary 2” in Cádiz, on its world cruise
The iconic “Queen Mary 2” docked yesterday for the first time at the port of Cádiz, after two failed attempts in May 2004 and September 2010, due to the operational limitations that the Cádiz port presented at that time, mainly regarding draft. The ship has a draft of 10 m and Cunard's safety regulations require an additional one and a half meters of margin, meaning 11.5 m. This time it was successful and docked at the “Reina Sofía” pier, which has a draft of 13 m, although it is a space usually dedicated to cargo.
The stop in Cádiz is one of the last on the world cruise that began on January 10 in Southampton, where it will return next Tuesday. A 120-day journey that has followed a long itinerary with a full camera and the option for passengers to do segments. Sevilla was offered as a destination of interest in the excursion options. The most media-covered ship in the global tourism industry has inscribed its name in the contemporary history of the port of Cádiz, although the largest ship that has docked is the “Anthem of the Seas.”
