Puente Genil Remembers CC Francisco Reina Carvajal, Commander of the Submarine C-4 Sunk in 1946
The expectations for the conference by retired submariner officer Diego Quevedo Carmona on the sinking of the submarine C-4 in Puente Genil, Córdoba, held last Thursday, September 17, in the auditorium of the local market, far exceeded predictions. The presentation was led by General José Carlos de la Fuente Chacón.
The event, organized by the Culture Department of the City Council, led by María Regalado, was attended by direct relatives of Captain Francisco Reina Carvajal, commander of the aforementioned submarine on the day of the tragedy, which occurred 80 years ago.
The conference titled “In Memory of the 44 Crew Members of Submarine C-4” recalls the fateful date of June 27, 1946, when the destroyer “Lepanto,” during naval maneuvers in Balearic waters, collided with and sank the submarine C-4 as it was surfacing.
As a result of the impact, the submarine sank and remains today at a depth of about 1,500 meters with its 44 crew members on board.
Diego Quevedo Carmona is an authority on the subject, having specialized in it throughout his many years of service in the Navy. A counselor of the IHCN, a member of the Royal Academy of the Sea, and an associate of AEME, he is among the prominent contributors to puentedemando.com.
Francisco Reina Carvajal (1911-1946), who has a street named in his honor in his city, ranked number 2 in his class of 1930, just behind Juan de Borbón.
