Portugal's Navy Chooses Fincantieri for the Construction of Three FREMM Evo Class Frigates
Portugal has commissioned three frigates from the Italian shipyard Fincantieri as part of its military fleet modernization plan. This was announced by Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during an official meeting between both governments.
The commissioned units belong to the FREMM Evo class, developed by Fincantieri, with deliveries expected between 2029 and 2030. The new frigates will gradually replace part of the current fleet of the Portuguese Navy.
The operation will involve an investment of 3.9 billion euros and will include, in addition to the construction of the vessels, their maintenance, logistical support, and technology transfer for at least 30 years.
Montenegro explained that the new frigates will strengthen Portugal's and Europe's ability to monitor their maritime resources, protect their strategic interests, and ensure the security of international trade routes. He also highlighted that the agreement will contribute to strengthening cooperation between the maritime industries of both countries.
The contract also includes significant participation from the Portuguese industry through the incorporation of national companies, technology transfer, and the modernization of the Arsenal de Alfeite, one of the main naval maintenance centers in the country. According to the Portuguese Ministry of Defense, the operation will have a significant return for the national economy and will strengthen the industrial capacity of the sector.
For her part, Meloni celebrated the decision of the Lisbon government and stated that the choice of Fincantieri represents "a recognition of the excellence of the Italian industry" and demonstrates that Europe can strengthen its strategic autonomy by betting on the industrial and technological capabilities of its companies.
