Other protagonists of the 45th anniversary of Ferry Gomera / 1
From the album of memories, Fernando Salvador Sánchez-Caro, an old and good friend from happy days, captain of the Merchant Marine and once a professor at the Higher School of Nautical Studies in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and general director of the Merchant Marine, sends us this photo taken in August 1978 at the foot of the dock in Los Cristianos, when he was relieving captain Servando Peraza García on the first ferry “Benchijigua,” the ship that made a new dawn possible in the history of La Gomera.
In the photo, from left to right, we see Ángel Umbría Ramos, chief engineer of the Merchant Marine, who later joined the Naval Reserve (RNA), accompanied by his wife and father. The photo was taken during a visit to the ferry “Benchijigua” coinciding with the stay on board of captain Fernando Salvador Sánchez-Caro. By the way, he taught his fellow professionals how to shorten the maneuvering time of this type of vessel, which was then new in the Canary Islands.
