“Norwegian Sun” collides with a small iceberg in Alaska
The cruise ship “Norwegian Sun” (IMO 9218131), registered in the Bahamas, collided this weekend with a small iceberg while sailing near the Hubbard Glacier in Alaska, reports the digital edition of USA Today. The shipping company, Norwegian Cruise Line, acknowledged the incident on Monday and explained that it occurred when the ship was enveloped in dense fog, which severely limited visibility.
According to the National Snow and Ice Data Center, the small iceberg was 3.30 feet above water and measured 6.60 feet wide. As a precautionary measure, the “Norwegian Sun” canceled its stop in Skagway and continued to Juneau for a hull inspection. Such incidents are considered “excessively rare” and involve pieces that have broken off from the glacier and remain afloat.
