The Navy Commemorates the 80th Anniversary of the Sinking of Submarine C-4 with a Tribute at the Naval Station of Sóller
The Navy has commemorated the 80th anniversary of the sinking of submarine C-4, one of the most significant tragedies in Spanish naval history. The accident, which occurred in 1946, resulted in the death of its 44 crew members.
The submarine C-4 sank on June 27, 1946 during naval maneuvers off the coast of Sóller (Mallorca), after colliding with the destroyer "Lepanto". The impact caused the submarine to sink rapidly, and none of its crew members could be rescued. Currently, its remains lie on the seabed, in waters near the Serra de Tramuntana.
On the occasion of this anniversary, several events have been held to remember the deceased sailors and keep their memory alive. The program began with a lecture by naval history specialist Diego Quevedo Carmona, a retired submariner officer of the Navy, who reviewed the causes of the accident, the historical context, and the characteristics of submarine C-4.
The program continued with an institutional event at the Naval Station of the port of Sóller, attended by civil and military authorities, as well as representatives of the Navy. During the ceremony, tribute was paid to the 44 deceased sailors, and a floral offering was made at sea from the Sa Creu lighthouse.
