Naviera Armas Seeks a Ferry to Reinforce the OPE 2016
Naviera Armas is managing the rental of a ferry that has a capacity of between 1,000 and 1,200 passengers to reinforce the OPE 2016 on the Almería-Melilla/Nador route. At the moment, it does not have any surplus fleet to allocate a ship of those characteristics to this service, so it is searching the international market for such a possibility. It is expected that Morocco will authorize this reinforcement with the port of Nador in the coming days and share it with Melilla.
In the past, Naviera Armas was interested in the ferry “Nova Star,” but the owner of the Moroccan company Inter Lines got ahead of them and has been covering the Tangier Med-Algeciras route since last March. Nevertheless, although it is a fantastic ship in terms of passenger capacity and the best operating in the Strait area, it has limitations in the garage, as it is designed to carry a considerable number of cars, but with rolling cargo, it quickly reaches maximum drafts and its profitability decreases.
