The Moroccan Port of Nador West Med Moves Towards Commissioning with the First Cranes of the Terminal
Morocco is advancing in the commissioning of Nador West Med, the new port located in the Bay of Betoya, in the Mediterranean. The container terminal already has its three first Super Post-Panamax STS dock cranes, ready to operate with large container ships.
The project began construction in 2016 and, after several delays, the first commercial operations are expected to start in the last quarter of 2026. The commissioning of the various terminals will be carried out progressively throughout 2027.
In addition to the dock cranes, the complex incorporates electrical equipment for the container yards, which will allow for the completion of loading, unloading, and transshipment operations.
Nador West Med is designed as a large port and industrial complex connected to the main logistics and industrial areas in its surroundings. One of its main objectives is to strengthen Morocco's position in international maritime routes and in Mediterranean transshipment traffic.
The container terminal will initially have an estimated capacity of 3 million TEU per year, with the possibility of expanding it by another 2 million. The project also includes capacity to manage 25 million tons of hydrocarbons, 7 million tons of coal, and up to 3 million tons of various goods.
