New Record for Giant MSC: Reaches 21.5% Share of Global Container Ship Fleet
MSC continues to make history in maritime transport, as the company now controls 21.5% of the global capacity of the container ship fleet, a percentage never before achieved by a shipping company. This is reflected in the latest report from the specialized consultancy Alphaliner.
MSC's growth has been particularly intense since 2020. In just a few years, the company has doubled its market share compared to 2010. Moreover, just a month ago, it set a record and became the first shipping company with a fleet of 1,000 ships.
While MSC controls 21.5%, Maersk follows with a 13.7% share. However, it is true that it has lost market share, as this is the lowest level recorded by the company in the last two decades. The Danish company is now more focused on renewing its fleet with sustainable technology.
Close behind is CMA CGM, which now controls 12.5% of the global container transport capacity. The French shipping company ranks third globally, and who knows, in a few years it might sneak into second place.
