Motril Celebrates the Growth of the Tangier Med Line
In its first month of operation, the Motril-Tangier Med line of Balearia has transported nearly five hundred trucks aboard the ferry “Volcán de Tauce,” which also allows for passenger transport. Daily cargo records, mainly fruits, construction materials, and fertilizers, confirm a “progressive growth,” with the 19th, 21st, and 29th being the busiest days, transporting 34, 35, and 42 trucks of goods, respectively.
Economical and reliable, the veteran “Volcán de Tauce” is the first ship of Naviera Armas, newly established as such in 1995. It has a capacity for 350 passengers and a garage for 1,023 linear meters of rolling cargo. Two Mak engines allow it to maintain a speed of 16 knots.
This new regular maritime line with Tangier-Med expands the offer for transporters from the port of Motril, the closest to Madrid and with direct access by highway. “We are in a privileged strategic position offering new loading possibilities and reducing the mileage of road transport,” assured the president of the Port Authority, José García Fuentes.
This is the second route of Balearia from the port of Motril, where it operates three weekly connections with Melilla as the shipping company awarded the public interest line with the autonomous city.
The president of the Port Authority of Motril highlighted the “great work” done to get this line up and running before the end of the year. “Everything is the result of the effort we have made to make the resumption of this line possible, which adds to those already operating in our port and connects us with Melilla, Nador, and Alhucemas. This means economic growth for our trade route with North Africa.”
