“Memories of the Dock”, retrospective exhibition at the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Tradition and novelty will meet this year at the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Carmen, patroness of seafarers, which every July 16 gathers thousands of faithful in one of the most emotional processions on the Island.
For this edition, which will be the ninety-seventh (97) according to data from the Port Authority, which places the first in 1919, the swimming crossing of the Anaga Dock has been revived, one of the historically most popular competitions, which will take place at noon on Saturday, July 9. The distance to be covered by participants will be from the North Dock to the Marquesina.
The most notable novelty is the I Exhibition “Memories of the Dock”, which will be located at the North Dock facilities and will be inaugurated next Friday, July 15, at 2 p.m. From that moment on, all sea, port, and boat enthusiasts will be able to enjoy an interesting display that will delight attendees. The exhibition promises to be engaging, as it is organized by José Marrero López, a knowledgeable and enthusiastic expert on port history.
The details of the program were presented this morning by the president of the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Ricardo Melchior; the mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Miguel Bermúdez; the port director, José Rafael Díaz; the president of the Insular Sailing Federation, Mariano Capdevilla; and the naval commander, Luis García Rebollo.
The head of the Port Authority highlighted the increase in participants and faithful, year after year, in the maritime procession, which reflects a “vocation of closeness to its coastline.” This time there will also be changes in the celebration of the III Regatta Virgen del Carmen-IV Trophy Ports of Tenerife, innovations that, according to Capdevilla, will represent a “qualitative leap in the competition,” open to all types of light sailing. In the cruising category, the regatta will be “trapeze type,” along the coast to Antequera.
The port director, José Rafael Díaz Hernández, reminded that all those who wish to participate in the maritime procession with their vessel must, beforehand, complete the same procedure as in previous years, requesting their corresponding authorization through the website of the Tenerife Port Authority. Access to the dock will be via the new walkway located in front of the Cabildo de Tenerife building.
