Melilla Proposes Extending the Maritime Transport Contract
The Deputy Minister of Commerce, Transport, and Tourism of Melilla, Jaime Bustillo Gálvez, considers it necessary for the State to extend the maritime contract until there is a stable Government that can make decisions. Bustillo understands that the current situation, with a service awarded for zero euros and the absorption of Trasmediterránea by the Armas Group, may lead to "unexpected movements," according to statements made to Onda Cero Melilla.
The Deputy Minister states that the City Government has "very clear" ideas on how to improve the service, despite having reached a high level. In addition to ensuring its viability, it aims to secure a number of seats reserved for Melillans with unavoidable commitments, improve travel conditions for pets, and prevent the purchase of unused tickets.
Bustillo believes that the importance of the Operation Paso del Estrecho for shipping companies must be taken into account, which he estimates accounts for between 60 and 70 percent of annual revenues, and suggests that the Motril line be included in the official contract.
