MARAD Contracts a Versatile Training Ship NSMV
The American shipyard Philly Shipyard has received the order for the construction of a new training ship for the Maritime Administration (MARAD). This is the fifth and final multi-mission national security vessel (known as NSMV in English). The contract for the NSMV-5 amounts to nearly 300 million dollars. Construction will begin in 2023 and is expected to be delivered in 2026.
The five NSMV vessels are designed as state-of-the-art training units for U.S. maritime academies. It will have the capacity for 600 cadets, with classrooms, laboratories, and a fully duplicated bridge. Additionally, it has been planned to have capacity for humanitarian aid and natural disaster cases, so it will be equipped with hospital facilities, a helipad, and beds for a thousand evacuees.
