Launch of the Ferry “Finncanopus” for Finnlines
The China Merchants Jinling shipyard, located in Weihai, launched the ferry “Finncanopus” yesterday, the second vessel of the Superstar series contracted by the Finnish company Finnlines, a subsidiary of the powerful Italian group Grimaldi. The first one, named “Finnsirius,” has been afloat since last August and is in the outfitting phase.
Both vessels are expected to enter service in the autumn of 2023 and will cover the Naantali–Långnäs–Kapellskär route between Finland, the Åland Islands, and Sweden. Almost 90% of the export trade and importance of both countries is transported by ship, and the two new units will bring a renewal to maritime traffic, making both passenger and cargo transport more sustainable.
The new ferries will be equipped with innovative technology that the Grimaldi Group applies to the GG5G project vessels. An air lubrication system generates air bubbles that reduce friction and hydrodynamic resistance; at berth, the auxiliary engines will be connected to the electrical grid as an alternative energy source, reducing emissions and noise.
Each vessel will have a high-power battery bank that will be recharged during port calls. The two-speed reduction gears will improve propulsion efficiency and save fuel. The transverse propellers at the bow, stabilizing fins, and cargo handling equipment will use eco-friendly oils.
“Green values” are prioritized in the design of onboard facilities and services. Lighting and ventilation can be adjusted in the cabins to reduce energy consumption. The furniture is made from recycled materials. Digital screens and mobile applications will replace printed menus, price lists, and travel programs. All this is also aimed at favoring local suppliers, avoiding shipments from longer distances.
Each vessel will have a capacity for 1,100 passengers in 323 cabins, which is double the current offering from Finnlines, and 64 crew members. The cargo capacity will be 5,200 linear meters (250 trucks and 200 cars).
