The Kamsarmax LNG-Powered Ship Project Advances
A consortium formed by the shipping company Arista Shipping, Deltamarin, the classification society ABS, and the engineering consultancy GTT, will develop a bulk carrier powered by liquefied natural gas, in the so-called “Project Forward.” It will be the first of its kind in the world to meet the Energy Efficiency Design Index level set by the IMO for 2025, the Tier III standard for NOx emissions, and the SOx emission levels of Annex VI of MARPOL in ECAs.
It will be a Kamsarmax vessel, larger than panamax ships, based on the B.Delta82 design by Deltamarin (225 m in length, 32.2 m in width, and 82,000 DWT), equipped with GTT membrane-type LNG tanks and basic design principles that could be applied to other sizes of bulk carriers and tankers.
According to initial estimates, a 40% reduction in CO2 emissions, an 80% reduction in NOx emissions, and a 98% reduction in SOx emissions are expected. The technical challenges to carry out this project are considerable. Among others, the need to carry a large volume of liquefied natural gas (2,500 m3), sufficient for a 40-day autonomy at full performance on this type of vessel.
