The new roll-on “Josefina de la Torre” from Baleària Canarias will debut on June 30 on the Cádiz route
The most significant novelty in the last 25 years of the Cádiz-Canarias route will occur next Tuesday, June 30, with the expected arrival at the Cádiz port of the new roll-on “Josefina de la Torre” from Baleària Canarias. This is also the third major milestone for the company, which has taken over the rescue of the Armas Trasmediterránea Group, following the debut in the Canaries of the fast ferries “Mercedes Pinto” and “Pepita Castellví”.
Just as in 1998, when the then Trasmediterránea marked a significant milestone with the incorporation of the roll-on ships “Super-Fast Canarias” and “Super-Fast Andalucía”, followed in 2001 by “Super-Fast Levante” and in 2010 by the ships “José M. Entrecanales” and “Super-Fast Baleares”, another great event is taking place with the imminent entry into service of the ship “Josefina de la Torre”.
Josefina de la Torre (1907-2022) was a prominent figure in the literature of Gran Canaria (1907-2022), a poet, novelist, lyrical singer, and actress linked to the Generation of '27 and the avant-garde Hispanic movement of the first half of the 20th century.
As already reported by puentedemando.com, this is a roll-on ship with 4,070 linear meters of rolling cargo (279 trailers and 150 plugs), flagged in Cyprus, which presents a new scenario in the evolution of maritime transport between the Peninsula and the Canaries, not only because it is the largest capacity ship in the contemporary history of this service, but also because it provides full guarantees to its customers and secures the fruit export from the Canaries.
The news published on May 25 on puentedemando.com —with nearly 30,000 views— had a great impact in the maritime media of Cádiz and the Canaries. As can be seen, Baleària is starting a new disruptive phase that aims to erase the negative image that the Armas Trasmediterránea Group has accumulated over the last four years.
In addition to the new “Josefina de la Torre”, Baleària Canarias has the roll-on ship “Villa de Tazacorte” and the ferry “Volcán de Tinamar” for the combined passenger and vehicle service, in this case with two weekly rotations; the first, direct from Cádiz to Gran Canaria and Lanzarote, and the second direct from Cádiz to Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Construction number 782 from the Flensburger Schiffbau-GmbH & Co. KG shipyard, Flensburg, Germany, the ship “Josefina de la Torre” is part of a series of nine units built on behalf of IVP Ship Invest.
Delivered in January 2023 under the name “Tennor Ocean”, since April 2023 it has been listed as owned by the Dutch company Safeen RoRo 31 Ltd. chartered to GFS Ship Management FZE from the United Arab Emirates and renamed “Abu Samrah”.
Weighing 32,894 gross tons and 12,089 deadweight tons, it measures 209.79 m in length, 26 m in beam, and 6.80 m in draft. It is powered by two MAN 8L48/60 CR engines that provide a total power of 19,200 kW over two shafts and variable pitch propellers, allowing it to maintain a speed of 21.5 knots and has twelve cabins for drivers. IMO 9925655.
