Iscomar Closes the Alcudia-Ciudadela Route on September 12
It was only a matter of time. Iscomar announced today the cessation of operations on the Alcudia-Ciudadela route, where it has remained against all odds for the last 18 years. On September 12, the ship “Nura Nova,” the last link of the Contenemar group, will dock. The decision is final, and the company has communicated this to the competent Balearic authority, which appreciates the trust of its customers and the efforts of its workers.
Iscomar has been unable to withstand the presence of two other operators on the route – Trasmediterránea and Balearia – which has added more competition in prices and services. Customers, whether passengers or transporters who have purchased tickets after the announced date, are guaranteed service. Thus, the end of this company arrives, which has been in a state of bankruptcy since October 16, 2009.
Iscomar started the Alcudia-Ciudadela route on June 19, 1998, with the ship “Nura Nova.” An aging but well-maintained vessel that travels at 13 knots and has proven its reliability with few cancellations during bad weather in winter. It has made an average of 535 annual trips, transporting 1,350,000 passengers and several hundred thousand linear meters of rolling cargo in about twenty thousand trips over the last 18 years.
