Inauguration of the Tourist Cruise Ship “Sirena” at the Port of Alcudia
In maritime circles in Mallorca, there is a possibility that the port of Alcudia could be considered as an alternative to the port of Palma for medium or small-sized cruise ships. The ship “Sirena”, owned by Oceania Cruises, made its first call at this port located on the northern coast of Mallorca yesterday.
The bay of Alcudia is one of the prime tourist areas in Mallorca. The combination of docking places for sports boats and the need for supply of goods for the island's consumption, as well as transit between Menorca and some ports on the peninsula and France, makes it a port with special characteristics.
It has two distinct areas: the commercial dock and the area for smaller vessels, which consists of the fishing dock and a marina. Nevertheless, it is primarily an energy port. Its facilities are used to unload coal for electricity production, as well as butane and propane gas.
The ship “Sirena” belongs to the R series or Regatta series and is the fourth of the eight ships originally ordered by Renaissance Cruises. Built at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, it entered service in October 1999 under the name “R. Four”. In October 2002, it was transferred to Princess Cruises and renamed “Tahitian Princess” and “Ocean Princess” in December 2009. Since November 2014, it has belonged to Oceania Cruises and has been named “Sirena” since April 2016.
Weighing 30,277 gross tons, it measures 181 m in overall length, 25.46 m in beam, and has a maximum draft of 5.80 m. It has a capacity for 702 passengers and is powered by four Wärtsila 12V32 engines, with a power output of 13,500 kW over two shafts, allowing it to maintain a speed of 18 knots. IMO Code 9187899.
