Grimaldi Terminal in Barcelona Celebrates Ten Years
Grimaldi Terminal Barcelona, located at the Costa dock and operated by the Grimaldi Group, celebrated its tenth anniversary on July 3rd with figures showing nearly five million passengers and 1.5 million trucks, the company reports.
With an initial investment of around 20 million euros in 2013 for the construction of the terminal, these ten years of activity demonstrate “the consolidation of the shipping group's project in Spain, as well as the commitment to the motorways of the sea and the development of the roro (roll-on/roll-off) model of the Grimaldi Group,” says the Director of Institutional Relations, Miguel Pardo.
The importance of the Port of Barcelona in the Grimaldi Group's trade and passenger strategy over these 10 years “has been significant, as they understood that companies like the Grimaldi Group could attract new, high-value traffic, removing trucks from the road, and time has shown that the decisions were correct, as traffic growth has exceeded expectations,” emphasizes the Director of Institutional Relations of Grimaldi Spain.
In these ten years, important milestones have been achieved, such as the boost to the railway work at Muelle Costa, carried out by the Port of Barcelona and the main entry point for cars at the terminal, or the entry of high-capacity ECO ships into the terminal, which has allowed the shipping group to grow in that segment.
Since its establishment in Spain, specifically at the Port of Barcelona, the Grimaldi Group has based its strategy on sustainability and efficiency, allowing its customers to reduce costs and their environmental footprint thanks to the motorways of the sea. Additionally, the technological improvements applied to newly built ships, along with their increased capacity, have enabled the Group to reduce emissions.
All Grimaldi ships on the routes from Spain to Italy are equipped with Zero Emission in Port technology, allowing the vessels to carry out all their operations in port without auxiliary engines running and, therefore, without generating emissions.
Furthermore, for the Balearic ships operated by Trasmed, the OPS (Onshore Power Supply) system will be implemented in 2024. This system will provide the dock with an onshore electrical connection to allow one or even two ships to connect during their stay and operate without emissions. Additionally, the terminal plans to install a photovoltaic plant to cover all its annual energy needs.
Regarding the social function of the shipping group, the opening of the Terminal to the city has been a commitment over these 10 years, demonstrated by the celebration of various events such as the Taste-IT gastronomic and musical festival in collaboration with the Italian Chamber of Commerce, the Christmas cocktail for the port community, and hosting the French team for the America’s Cup until the end of 2024.
