The frigate “Álvaro de Bazán” participated in a naval air exercise in the United Kingdom
The frigate “Álvaro de Bazán”, flagship of NATO’s Standing Naval Group 1 (SNMG-1), has completed its participation in the “Joint Warrior 161” (JW-161) exercises held from April 10 to 21 in the waters of northern and western Scotland, reports the Spanish Navy.
A wide participation of countries (12 NATO members plus Sweden, Finland, and New Zealand) and the high number of land, air, and maritime units involved made this edition particularly demanding for all participants. A considerable number of aircraft, as well as four submarines, took part.
On Tuesday, the 19th, the frigate “Álvaro de Bazán” participated in a naval gunfire support exercise at the Cape Wrath firing range (northern Scotland), where it conducted three thousand rounds. A total of 235 personnel were onboard, including support staff (submarine coordinators, air controllers, naval gunfire support coordinators), as well as 12 officers and non-commissioned officers from six different countries.
The embarked staff was under the command of Rear Admiral José Enrique Delgado Roig, the current commander of NATO’s Standing Naval Group 1 (COMSNMG-1).
