Chinese Ship "Shenghang Yongle" Becomes First Accredited for Ammonia Bunkering Operations
The ship "Shenghang Yongle" (IMO 9980019), flagged in China, has become the world's first operational vessel to supply ammonia between ships, thanks to a comprehensive transformation project.
The conversion has been led by Jiangsu Andefu Energy Development, with the participation of FKAB Marine Design and the cargo handling systems provider Gloryholder.
The "Shenghang Yongle" is a semi-refrigerated and semi-pressurized gas carrier of 5,500 m³, originally designed by FKAB and built in China by the Dingheng shipyard. Before its conversion, it was prepared to transport various liquefied gases, including ammonia, LPG, and vinyl chloride monomer.
The adaptation it has undergone allows it to transport liquid ammonia and also refuel other ships. Additionally, it has received the first classification certificate for ammonia supply.
The commissioning of this unit represents a step forward for the development of ammonia bunkering, an infrastructure still limited but with great potential in the decarbonization of maritime transport.
