EMSA conducts 1,043 inspections and 312 sampling of ships in 2021
The EMSA (European Maritime Safety Agency) has set a target for 2021 to carry out a minimum of 1,043 documentary inspections and at least 312 sampling of ships regarding the sulfur content of the fuels used. As of March 31, 480 inspections of ships and 128 samplings had been conducted, a figure that includes all maritime captaincies in Spain, according to information obtained by puentedemando.com from close sources.
When a ship is in the port of an EU country, it is only allowed to use fuel with a maximum sulfur content of 0.10% by mass. This is an EU regulation, which is more stringent in environmental matters than that developed by the IMO (International Maritime Organization).
