A Container Ship Capsizes in a Turkish Port
The container ship “Sea Eagle” (IMO 8410380), registered in Togo, lost stability during container unloading operations on September 18 at the port of Iskenderun (Turkey). It initially listed to starboard but then fell onto its port side, where it is now partially submerged.
Some of the containers have fallen into the water, and 24 units have been recovered, according to local authorities. When it began to lose stability, the crew abandoned the ship, and it quickly became submerged. An anti-pollution barrier has been set up due to the possibility of a fuel spill, although just over 64 tons of fuel have been recovered.
This is a German-built ship, produced by the J.J. Sietas shipyard and in service since September 1984. It is currently owned by Egyptian interests and operates a route between Alexandria (Egypt) and several ports in Turkey.
