Cartagena Welcomes the “Elcano” Again, Twenty Years Later
With 2.5 m waves and NE winds of 16 knots, the training ship “Juan Sebastián de Elcano” presented itself this morning before the historic city of Cartagena. During its stay, the cruise terminal will be named “Juan Sebastián de Elcano,” in recognition of the co-protagonist of the first circumnavigation of the world, which celebrates its fifth centenary.
This proposal was made by the mayor of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo, to the president of the Port Authority, Yolanda Muñoz, and has been well received by the Navy, represented by Admiral of Maritime Action, Juan Luis Sobrino.
High-level efforts have been made with the Ministry of Defense to ensure that the training ship “Juan Sebastián de Elcano” returns to Cartagena after 20 years of absence, coinciding with the anniversary of the V Centenary.
These efforts have found support within the Navy, which considers the event to be “especially significant,” as recognized by the ALMART.
The Spanish Navy's training ship comes from the port of Barcelona, where it remained for four days after an absence of 18 years.
