Canary Islands demand the State to restore the maritime route between Fuerteventura and Cádiz as a public service obligation
The Government of the Canary Islands will again ask the Ministry of Transport to guarantee the Public Service Obligation (OSP) on the maritime route between Puerto del Rosario (Fuerteventura) and Cádiz, after this connection lost that status on June 30.
The Minister of Public Works, Housing and Mobility, Pablo Rodríguez, announced that the regional government will send a new letter to the Ministry and has requested an urgent meeting to address this situation.
Rodríguez explained that the loss of this direct connection harms Fuerteventura, as passengers and goods must now travel through Lanzarote or Gran Canaria to reach Cádiz. According to the minister, this results in increased costs, longer travel times, and a loss of competitiveness for the island.
The Canary government requests that Fuerteventura be included in the next awarding of maritime routes with Public Service Obligation, which currently includes connections with Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Tenerife, and La Palma.
Furthermore, the regional government maintains its request to the State to also declare the maritime routes of the so-called "triangle of the green islands," which connects La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro, as public service in order to improve connectivity between these islands.
