“BigRoll Barentz” in Algeciras on Inaugural Voyage
Anchored in the waters of Algeciras Bay is the heavy lift vessel “BigRoll Barentz”, owned by the Dutch company BigRoll Shipping, which is on its inaugural voyage from Singapore to Siberia, transporting a massive piece intended for gas extraction, reports Captain Carlos Duclós, pilot of the Algeciras port.
It is the first of a series of four MC (Module Carriers) type vessels, featuring an innovative hull design that highlights a large ballasting capacity to reduce operational times, low fuel consumption, a cruising speed of 13 knots, and reliable behavior at sea, suitable for carrying heavy loads to remote areas, such as the Arctic.
The vessel “BigRoll Barentz” has been built at the Cosco Dalian shipyard (China) and together with its twin “BigRoll Bering” are chartered by Yamgaz, a consortium formed by Technip, JGC Corporation, and Chiyoda, for the transportation of modules for the Yamal LNG project. It can operate at extreme temperatures of minus 55º Celsius. It measures 173 m in length and 42 m in width, with a deadweight of 22,000 tons. The deck load capacity is 20 tons per square meter.
