Barcelona Port Awards Construction of Future Hydrogen Plant to SympH2ony with Planned Investment of €20 Million
Barcelona Port has awarded SympH2ony, a joint venture formed by Toyota Tsusho Europe and Messer, the construction and operation of the future hydrogen plant at the port, with an investment of 20 million euros.
The future facility will be located on a 7,000 m² plot in the ZAL Prat, a strategic location to serve the entire port, the Logistics Activities Zone, the Free Zone, and other industrial areas in the vicinity. Its goal will be to supply hydrogen to trucks, buses, and port machinery, facilitating the transition to zero-emission fleets.
The project includes a green hydrogen production and supply plant, as well as mobile units to service equipment that cannot travel to the station. It also considers the possibility of future connections via pipelines for large consumers. The facility will have an electrolysis capacity of 3.1 MW by 2030, expandable to 6.2 MW by 2032, with an estimated production of up to 540 tons of hydrogen annually.
This is a pioneering infrastructure in the Spanish port system, as it will not only distribute hydrogen but also produce it on-site using 100% renewable energy. The concession will last for 40 years, extendable, and also includes the development of access roads and the construction of a new roundabout to improve mobility in the area.
