Second High-Speed Line of Balearia in the Bahamas
Balearia Caribbean has launched this week its second route between the United States and the Bahamas, connecting the island of Bimini with Fort Lauderdale, north of Miami. This route is operated by the catamaran "Jaume II," which has a capacity of 650 passengers and a speed of 35 knots, making the crossing duration less than two hours.
Balearia Caribbean has scheduled five weekly services to Bimini, which can be increased depending on demand.
According to Balearia's president, Adolfo Utor, the opening of the new line “will improve the quality of service between Florida and Bimini, operating with a vessel of greater speed, capacity, and comfort for passengers.”
Balearia Caribbean has been operating the route from Fort Lauderdale to Grand Bahama since 2011, with nearly a million passengers traveling since its inception. It had also operated the route to Bimini for a few months in 2013.
Balearia operates three other international routes in North Africa and aims to establish itself as a global operator by expanding its business model to other Caribbean countries, such as Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, or Cuba.
In 2018, Balearia surpassed one million passengers on international routes for the first time, meaning that one in four passengers in the group traveled on one of these lines. Revenue from international routes grew by 16% in 2018, reaching 22% of Balearia's total, according to the company.
