Andorran company AYK Energy to supply batteries for Grimaldi's new ro-pax ships
The battery manufacturer AYK Energy, based in Andorra, has signed an agreement with the Grimaldi Group to supply the batteries that will equip the company's new ro-pax ships. Each of the nine ships will feature a 2,073 kWh battery, totaling a capacity of 18,657 kWh for the entire fleet.
The new ships will be built at the China Merchants Jinling shipyard, with delivery expected between 2028 and 2030. Six of them will operate in the Mediterranean under the Grimaldi Lines and Minoan Lines brands, while the remaining three will sail the Baltic Sea with Finnlines.
These ships are designed to reduce their environmental impact and improve the efficiency of maritime passenger and roll-on/roll-off cargo transport. To achieve this, they will incorporate engines capable of running on methanol, shore power connections while docked, heat recovery systems, and an optimized hull and propeller design to reduce fuel consumption.
The batteries, named OrionAN, will help enhance the energy efficiency of the ships and reduce their emissions. Additionally, they have received DNV certification, ensuring they meet the stringent safety and performance standards of the maritime industry.
AYK Energy's founder, Chris Kruger, emphasized that this contract demonstrates the growing interest of shipping companies in incorporating battery systems into their vessels to move towards more sustainable maritime transport. He explained that these solutions allow for reduced fuel consumption and emissions while providing a return on investment in just a few years, encouraging adoption by shipowners.
