ACOESTE Brings Port Activity Closer to Nautical Degree
On Thursday morning, the Provincial Association of Shipping Agents and Stevedores of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (ACOESTE) launched a new collaborative initiative with the Higher Polytechnic School of Engineering (EPSI), Nautical, Machines, and Naval Radioelectronics Section of the University of La Laguna (ULL), starting a series of training talks for the students of that faculty.
The objective of this initiative is to provide students with a professional perspective on the various activities of the port, “so that they can have a broader view of the maritime business as a whole and the different actors involved, through various professionals with extensive experience in the sector,” says David Hernández Cabrera, president of the Tenerife employers' association. Thus, “ACOESTE strengthens its commitment and social responsibility by helping to train our future sailors,” he adds.
The presentation was led by Alexis Dionis Melián, dean of the Nautical School, and David Hernández Cabrera, president of ACOESTE. The speaker for this first occasion was José Ignacio Uriarte Lecue, captain of the Merchant Marine and director of the Tenerife Container Terminal (TCTenerife).
In a friendly and pleasant atmosphere, he engaged the students with various experiences from his long and varied professional career. He aimed to convey the versatility of the degree they are pursuing, as well as to spark their interest in the different career paths their training offers.
In the final part, the students posed multiple and varied questions to the speaker, turning the talk into an interactive and very enriching meeting.
