90 Tons of Fuel Remain Aboard the 'Wakashio' Ship
The Prime Minister of Mauritius, Pravind Jugnauth, has reported that most of the fuel from the bulk carrier 'Wakashio' has been extracted, although it is estimated that around 90 tons of fuel remained in the tanks when the hull of the stranded ship broke in two last Saturday.
At the time of the grounding on July 25, the ship's fuel tanks contained about 4,000 tons of fuel and diesel for its engines, and before the hull broke, approximately 3,000 tons had been extracted.
However, the ecological crisis is unfolding in an area of world-renowned coral reefs and wetlands that make the island a wildlife refuge. The leader has already warned the owning company and the insurer of the wrecked ship that compensation will be required for the damages caused, and Nakasaki Shipping has committed to this.
